Dr Ntjapa Lebaka, a hop breeder at the SAB Hop Farms, recently visited the CenGen laboratory to discuss future collaborations and the integration of molecular technologies into their breeding program. Pictured above is Ms Kelly Breeds, responsible for the molecular work utilized in SABBI’s (the South African Barley Breeding Institute) barley breeding programme. It was a ‘full circle’ moment seeing Kelly showcase the robotic instrumentation that was placed at CenGen through SAB & AB InBev’s (Anheuser-Busch InBev) Public Interest Commitment Investments. This machinery has the potential to be used for many crops and industries, but its use for barley and hop will certainly lead to the perfect beer.
