This September saw Kelly Breeds and Daniël de Klerk (breeder at South African Barley Breeding Institute) travel to Perth, Western Australia, to attend the 19th Australian Barley Technical Symposium. It was Kelly’s first and Daniël’s third attendance at this symposium, which is held on a biennial basis. This year’s symposium boasted world-renowned scientists, Drs Nils Stein and Martin Mascher, as keynote speakers.
Highlights of the trip included attending the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia’s barley spring field walk, visiting the Centre for Crop and Disease Management (click here for a tweet from the visit) and having a tour of the Australian breeding company Intergrain.
Many potential collaborations were identified and email addresses swapped, invoking a feeling of excitement for future barley work at CenGen.
